A reflection of human activity, congestion and space, light and dark, it highlights the significant and the mundane of our daily experiences. The diptych, Week In Week Out: Sevo, is a drawing in two parts developed from a series of photographic images taken during a residency at Blacktown Arts Centre. In the aftermath of weather extremes and fire storms as surreal landscapes appear all around us this experience was a poignant cue to look at our world anew through the devastation. My husband nearly burnt down our kitchen. Before I got angry, I made some artworks… on the abstract interconnectedness of human and non-human worlds. This image is taken of spider webs that had attracted fine soot from the smoke and ash. A reflection of human activity, congestion and space, light and dark, it highlights the significant and the mundane of our daily experiences. The diptych, Week In Week Out: Sevo, is a drawing in two parts developed from a series of photographic images taken during a residency at Blacktown Arts Centre. Using 20,000 moths made by participants worldwide, Moths to a Flame became a magnificent art installation made by citizens from around the world displayed at Glasgow’s Kibble Palace botanic gardens during the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in November 2021. Moths to a Flame is continuing to engage thousands of people in creative activity and conversation inspired by our energy systems, relationship with nature, and the climate emergency. Dharug people live in a matriarchal society where they are respected and cared for by their family group. Each Dharug woman has a dreaming story that is used to decorate their body for ceremonies and tools to tell their own stories. We make our dyuguma (string bags) from the reeds and tree barks to carry our food and resources in, many are gathered with our guni (digging stick) that carry our story. The Wiyangamadda connection to this place, with knowledge of our medicine and foods that are shared by our mothers, has supported Dharug yura for thousands of years… Inspiration for the Welcome to Country artwork came from the dyuguma (net or string bags) used by Dharug people when gathering resources. The shape emulates dyuguma imagery from a painting of women’s healing tools by Leanne Watson. The natural world provides us with endless opportunities to pause and witness astonishing processes in action around us. Utilising both observations of the external world and reflections on an internal one the image plays with the painterly potential of digital imagery that has its origins in photography and its resolution in print. These concepts flow like a train of thought, independent and at times converging. Working from photographic images this work observes ripples created by singular events and the patterns of their interactions (fluid dynamics, air currents and light refractions) with one another. Cool Clarity of a Barrow Water Winter observes reflections of the forest on water and leaves that collected in my wheelbarrow after rain. These phenomena are universally mesmerising and speak of meditations, repetition and change, quiet moments, internal reflection, and the crispness of ablutions taken outside in winter.
